[Mushverse, mostly for Liveman family] Throwing Kamen Rider Gaia into the mix

The parents are finally in bed and I sigh in relief as I hear the light get switched off. It's about time, I thought they were never coming up. I just need to wait a bit now, give them time to go to sleep before I do this. Eventually though, I get out of bed and make my way downstairs, careful to avoid the creaky stairs.

I should probably tell them I'm working with Gaia and EYES now, but they'd just try to talk me out of it and I need to do this, for any number of reasons; getting paid is only one of them. I rummage inside my bag and pull out the envelope before heading into the kitchen. That's where Megumi keeps her purse and she does the groceries so she gets more. There's a lot of us to feed, after all, and I know she worries about it, even if she won't admit it in front of us. I split the rest of the wages between Jou and Yuusuke before ripping up the envelope and dropping it in the bin.

There. All sorted for the week. I dust my hands off in satisfaction and head back to bed.

"Oi," I protest, rubbing my arm theatrically. "Sure, but you never know, you might learn something, too."

I raise my eyebrows at him sardonically. "More than I already have from the three of you, not to mention the things Gamu comes out with? I doubt it."

I'm surrounded by scientists, I think if there's anything I really need to know I'm all covered.

I laugh. "Yes, because one has obviously learned all one is ever going to learn by your age," I say solemnly.

I'm teasing, partly, and that's mostly due to relief that he's a) not doing anything stupid like being in a gang and b) if he is doing something stupid like fighting, at least he's part of a team and he's being reasonably careful. I know what he's saying, because he's not scientifically inclined and he's still learned a lot, he's a good kid, smart kid, even.

But on the other hand? I'm still learning and I feel about ninety-seven next to him some days. I subscribe to about half as many scientific journals as I'm interested in, and I'm still behind on my reading.

I wave a hand in his direction, my nose crinkling in mild irritation. "I'm not planning on going into science," I point out. "I don't need to know that much about it."

I shake my head with mock sadness. "Everyone needs science, Katsumi. Everyone."

I sigh. "I suppose I'd better go tell Megumi and Yuusuke. Unless you'd rather do it yourself."

"I have science. I have science everywhere. I cannot escape the science, okay?"

Then he mentions telling Megumi and Yuusuke and I wince. I really don't want to have this conversation all over again. Although I suppose the look on Yuusuke's face when he realises I'm not in a gang or whatever else he was thinking would be satisfying.

"And that's exactly how it should be," I say smugly. His face falls, and I press the heels of my hands to my eyes for a moment, because that damn headache's starting up again. "I'll tell them," I concede. "But you know they'll want to talk to you, too."

"I can sleep first before they do," I sigh. I think the adrenaline's wearing off because now I just feel drained. Although I guess the conversation's part of it as well.

"You do that, then," I agree. "And you'll have to be more careful about eating and sleeping and exercising if you're going to manage this and your schoolwork."

"Yes, mom," I say with exaggerated patience. "And I'll wrap up warm in cold weather so I don't catch a chill."

For crying out loud, how stupid does he think I am? I know these things already.

Snotty little terror. "Go to bed, impudent brat. And don't let me catch you complaining about eating your vegetables."

I stick my tongue out as I get to my feet. "I won't, but only because Megumi is scarier than you are."

"You bet your ass she is," I say fervently. "Terrifies me. And if you upset her, you'll have both of us to answer to." I wag a finger, only teasing. He does not upset Megumi. He's a good kid.

Perfectly happy to terrify or worry the crap out of me or Yuusuke, though.

"Like I'd be that stupid," I snort, almost out the door. I don't really like worrying Jou or Yuusuke - most of the time, anyway, no matter what they think - but upsetting Megumi is the last thing I would want to do.

Well, except for going back to the lab I was in when I first arrived on this planet, that's probably the last thing I would want to do, ever, period. But upsetting Megumi comes right before that.

"You've done stupider things," I say in a dire kind of way, but considering I don't actually have anything in mind, I yawn and let it drop.

"I love you. Next time tell me immediately when you're doing something like this. Get some sleep, idiot," I call after him.

I'm just out the door when he comes out with that and I stick my head back around in outrage. "When did I?" I demand, scowling at him. Getting kidnapped - any of the times - doesn't count, those aren't things I did deliberately.

"Go to bed!" I protest. "I can't think of anything right now, but I'll have a ten page essay written for you by the morning."

"I'm going, I'm going," I protest. "You're the one throwing accusations like that around."

And I'll bet he'll have an essay but ten pages is a massive underestimate.

"Yup, that's me, Mr Accuser," I say, rolling my eyes at him. "Really, Katsumi. You do make things up. Scoot."

Oh, that does it. Unfortunately the only projectile I have to hand is a tissue. A scrunched up one, though, which means it should have some potential...

I flick it in his direction before scooting out the room.
