To switch, or not to switch?

Why is it called a Switch anyway? It's obviously a button.

To press, then, or not to press? That is the question.

"I don't know! I don't understand Greeeds!" I wail, beginning to reach my weirdness limit. "You didn't wake up on a lab table with someone cackling evilly over you?"

I take another step back, eyes back. Was he always like this? Surely not. Maybe just not around me.

"No." This question catches me off guard, and I blink. "I woke up in a park. On the ground."

I let my shoulders slump as I screw up my face, trying to work this out. Why? Who?!

But he obviously doesn't know. "O~kay," I say eventually. "Are you still able to make Yummies?"

I squint at him. Flex my hands, but I know I'm helpless.

I really hate being helpless.

"No." I snap. "At least, not that I know. I have no Cell medals either."

I scratch the back of my head. "I -- I guess I can't just destroy you, then," I say, hating the uncertainty in my own voice, but really, this is ridiculous.

I can't attack an unarmed human, who hasn't attacked me.

I snort at him. "No, I suppose you can't." This is a good thing, obviously, but I still...

I don't trust him. I can't trust him.

I examine his face curiously. "You're wondering about Ankh." Tch. "You got so attached to him?"

I nod miserably, hunching in on myself. "Can you sense him?"

Oh. That's a new feeling.

Pity?

Yes.

Odd.

I shake my head. "I can't." I wet my lips thoughtfully. "But if I came back..."

"Ah," I say, nodding faster and faster. "Ah, yes, thank you, Kazari!"

Three words I never thought I'd say in a row.

I purse my lips at him, taking a step back. "No need to thank me. It's not my fault I exist. You never know, maybe your hopes are up for nothing."

"No, I'll find him. Everything will be fine," I assure him. "And you -- if you're not here to make Yummies, what are you doing?"

"I'm sure." I blink at him, then laugh. "Well, I'm living, obviously."

"Just... living?" I am befuddled, bewildered, and completely confused. Why would a Greeed just live?

I'm not sure I like the look on his face. Like I've even given him a reason not to trust me (yet) and he's already all nervous and convinced I'm lying to him.

"Well, wouldn't you?" I snarl. "It's new for me, you see. Why shouldn't I live?"

I swallow, forcing myself to consider this. Maybe he has a right to this. If he's not hurting anyone, and all he wants to do is live, be human... "You're right," I say humbly. "If you want to be human, you should."

I cross my arms and frown at him. "Well, I don't think I have much of a choice in the matter. I just woke up this way."

I tilt my head. "It's better than not existing."

"Definitely," I have to agree with that. "Are you staying somewhere nearby?"

I have to admit I tentatively trust him. But I still want to keep an eye on him.

I tilt my head at him curiously. He doesn't really care... does he?

Oh. No, that would be the human lack of self awareness. He wants to keep an eye on me. He still thinks me a danger, or a potential opponent or... something.

"I have been, uh. Taken in by someone, yes."

"Oh, good," I say with relief. I give him a genuine smile, then get confused and stop smiling. It's still weird to smile at him.

"You know, I don't bite." He's so easy to read. No wonder Ankh chose him at first.

That was a long time ago, though. Things are different now. Not least is that fact that I'm not so intent on devouring the entire world anymore.

"Unless provoked." I add fairly.

The problem with being an open book is that everyone knows what you're thinking. I swallow uncomfortably, and nod. "So you're going to school here?"

I glance over my shoulder at this, but it's a fair enough accusation. I must be as easy to read as he is.

"For the time being, yes."

Why am I being so honest with him, anyway? He's still a potential enemy, isn't he?

Is anyone, anymore? Now that I'm human, at least partially so, shouldn't I be on his 'side'? Does he even have a 'side' anymore? He can't transform, I think that means he's not OOO anymore.

"What's your name, anyway?" It's on the tip of my tongue. Ankh was always screaming it.

...wow. A Greeed going to school. I try not to let my reaction show about that, but I'm sure he can read it in my face.

"You don't know?" My eyes are wide. He's heard Ankh yell it often enough.

I frown at him. Why exactly is it so surprising that I would want to go to school? I've never done it before, after all. Humans are so oblivious to everything they have.

"No." I shrug one shoulder. "I know Ankh could never stop screaming at you, but I don't exactly have a good memory for names." Why should I? He was always just OOO.

It feels really strange giving this to him, but it's not like he hasn't heard it before.

I nod awkwardly, then say at last, "Eiji. Hino Eiji."
