It's summertime! Out with the snow and the dark, here come the sun and sea, watermelons and slushies, long lazy days, and all the things that make summer wonderful.

Along with a few other things.

Honestly, your character loves summer. How can they not? They don't mean to spoil the fun. They could've been having a grand old time right now, if it weren't for...

1. The heat! No kidding, hot in summer? Who would've thought. The AC broke and the fan just can't keep up. What to do? Why, complain, of course.

2. The bugs! EEK! It's cockroach season! Or possibly the invasion of the bloodsucking horde. Pick up a shoe and join the defending army.

3. Allergies! You know what's nice about the bare trees in winter? They're bare. Is it September yet?

4. Those meddling kids! Some of us don't get summer vacation no more, you little bastards. Stop partying at all hours!

5. The crowds! The beach was a lot nicer when you didn't have to share it with approximately twenty two billion other people. Some of them in wildly unflattering swimsuits.

6. That one unbearably cheerful friend who thinks summer is really just the best thing and they will prove it to you if they must shove a gallon of ice cream down your screaming mouth.

7. Or something else equally annoying and horrid, because fuck summer.

"Right. The idea is to divert the water away from the structure. Of course, moats weren't built for that normally, but in this case, that's what it's for. We'll want a moat, an inlet, and an outlet."

Sometimes I forget that not everybody is into structural defenses as I am.

"Castle geek," I tease even as I start digging. "I'm not really sure what inlets and outlets are, so you'll have to guide me, okay?" But hey, bonding! I don't know much about his childhood, but I suspect there weren't a lot of kids his age nearby growing up.

"It's... we want to make a river, basically. It'll split into a circle around the castle, and then merge at the back." I hope I'm not getting too technical.

"I'm not a geek, I just... like structures." And building things.

[gimmedonuts]

"Mm-hmm. You just keep telling yourself that." Okay, that seems deep enough. "Do you wanna help me with the circle bit? I am a recovering invalid, after all." I smirk, so he'll understand that I'm joking. Well, in theory.

I catch the look in his eyes. I'm getting better at reading him. "Let me draw where you need to dig." I draw two arcs using the center of the castle as reference. It's not a perfect circle, but it'll work.

He's doing a good job with the inlet, at least.

"Wow." I blink This is going to be a very big moat. "You don't mess around, do you?"

I start digging again, because I'm gonna be at it for awhile, it seems!

"Not when it comes to my castles," I tell him, before I start working on the other side. It occurs to me that I made the moat too wide, but it really doesn't matter, does it? "But if you're not up to it...."

Really.

"I'm up for anything, anytime, especially if it involves proving how awesome I am," I promise Leo as I start digging so fast sand flies.

I have to smile. I think we went into this trying to make the other relax. I think I've won.

I let him win, digging my side slowly, with precision.

[gimmedonuts]

"Ah ha!" I plop down once I'm done-- still not used to this much physical exertion again, but I did it! And I won! "See you at the finish line, Leo." Nevermind that there isn't a finish line.

(Muse kicked in very late this evening)

"I'm afraid that you've beaten me," I tell him as I'm working on my own side. "But I made you relax first."

"Pfft, yeah, right..." But I'm kinda lying on the ground now, panty and happy.

"Okay, you win. This time!"

RL has a nasty way of doing that. :(

I grin, still working on my side of the moat. I can't let him win - well, he already has won, but I still want to finish. I'm just more careful.

When I finish, I flop down beside him. Even if the tide comes in, we'll still have our castle.
